Meknes

Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, was founded in the 11th century by the Almoravid dynasty as a military settlement. It reached its zenith under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the late 17th century, who transformed it into a magnificent capital, often referred to as the "Versailles of Morocco." Meknes is known for its grand gates, such as Bab Mansour, and its impressive palaces, gardens, and fortifications, all reflecting the sultan’s ambition. The city also has deep ties to Morocco’s rich agricultural landscape, surrounded by fertile plains that produce olives, wine, and grains. The historic medina of Meknes is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where visitors can explore its bustling souks, traditional craftsmanship, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Despite its historical grandeur, Meknes is less frequented by tourists compared to Marrakech and Fez, offering a more tranquil and authentic Moroccan experience.
